69 year old Carol Carpenter has been charged with first degree murder for starving her 27 year old son, Corey Carpenter, to death. “He was very, very malnourished to the point where all his bones were showing through,” said Costilla County Undersheriff Andrew Espinosa. “He wasn’t provided the food and water he needed to live.” The mother and son lived in Blanca, Colorado. Carpenter is being held without bond in the Costilla County Detention Facility.
Mrs. Carpenter was taking care of her totally disabled son since her husband died. Investigators believed her son could walk but was unable to prepare his own food. Update: 9/29/16: Mother did not get medical care for son
Carol Carpenter told investigators she did not trust medical care providers and felt she could get her son, Corey Carpenter, to eat again. Carol told investigators her son was sick with fever and diarrhea in the two weeks before of his death and that she had not seen her son eat for six days before he died. She only tried to get medical treatment for her son at the very end.
Corey Carpenter was diagnosed with Fragile X. A genetic disorder that causes intellectual disability and cognitive disorders according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine. Source: Blanca mother resisted getting medical help for son
