17 soldiers were killed and 35 wounded when Islamists attacked a military base yesterday. Two groups claimed responsibility for the attacks although security officials doubt this is true. One of the groups stated the attack was in response to the Mali army’s attacks, arrests, torture and murder of civilians. A government spokesman stated they will investigate the attacks. Mali was in a previous state of emergency after the November 20th attack on the Radisson Blu hotel where jihadists killed 20 people, 14 of whom were foreigners. Update: 7/20/16
The current state of emergency will be extended by 10 days. One of the two groups that claimed responsibility for the attacks is said to have links to al-Qaeda. The most recent attack is the first by the second group that claimed responsibility. The state of emergency allows Mali police to search homes without a warrant and prohibits protests.
